Breakers Add Depth to 2024 Coaching Roster

Our preparations for the 2024 season are progressing well and we thought we would give you an update on some very excellent additions to our “on ground” team in 2024.

Simon Kacimaiwai returns as first grade coach and overall coaching director for the club in 2024. Also, Angus, Alex and Tom return to look after our colts program. that have had major success in recent years. We have been able to add two new coaches who will look after 2nd Grade and also act as backs coaches for 1st grade this year, who have long history as players in Shute Shield clubs and who have recently moved into the area.

Over 10 years, Hugh Somerville Played at Norths, Easts and Randwick in 1st grade games and gained representative selection for NSW A, NSW Universities and also NSW Subbies (when he played at Sydney Harlequins). During this time Hugh has also played reserve grade for the Cronulla Sharks. Hugh has played in all backline position at first grade level, except 9. He has recently moved to Bungan Beach with his wife Maddy, who is expecting their 3rd child any day now and is enthusiastically looking forward to contributing his knowledge to the club in 2024.

Knowing one of his old coaches from his time at Norths had also recently moved to Avalon, Hugh has been able to recruit Paul Horton to Newport. Before coaching, Paul was a first grade fullback at Norths and Randwick and also ran on for some games with the Waratahs. He was legendary under the high ball, nick named "Highball Horto” in his playing days. After finishing his playing career he coached at Norths as a skills coach where he met Hugh. While at Norths Paul also coached its 7s side to victory in the Kiama and Crescent Head 7s tournaments.

Both Hugh and Paul will be helping Angus with the 7s program in 2024 where as you know, we are defending our Hamilton and Warringah 2023 titles.
